#DailyDevotion With Jesus We Shall Do Valiantly

Psalm 108 6Save us by Your right hand and answer us so Your dear people may be free.

This section of the Psalm is from Psalm 60. Spoken by David during the time of the conquest of the land, David here petitions the LORD to do for him what He had promised Israel while they were in the wilderness. He is relying on the covenant the LORD had made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in his petition here. While in the Promised Land, the Israelites, because of their sins, had been oppressed by the people they were supposed to conquer. David, being a righteous man, asked the LORD to save them by His right hand to save free His dear people.

We too appeal to the right hand of God for the LORD to answer us, save us and set us free from the slavery to sin and the fear of death. The right hand of God is our LORD Jesus Christ. Jesus intercedes for us at the Father’s right hand. It is Jesus at the right hand of the Father who pours His blood upon the mercy seat of the Almighty to save us from our sins. By His resurrection from the dead and ascension to the right hand of the Father, Jesus has set us free. He thereby cleanses our conscience when we are baptized into Him. He has broken our bondage to sin and the fear of death.

7God promised from His holy place: “I will triumph, divide Shechem, and measure off the valley of Succoth. 8Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim is a helmet on My head; Judah is My scepter, 9Moab is the basin I wash in; I will toss My shoe to Edom; I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”

In answer to David’s petition the LORD speaks a word of promise. It isn’t something different than what the LORD had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It does describe it in a more up to date version of what exists in David’s time. Ephraim is the nothern part of Israel. Judah, the tribe and area from which David comes from, is where the seat of government is because that is where David the king is. The east bank of the Jordan, which Israel defeated before crossing the Jordan is claimed. Moab and Edom are subject to Israel. Israel indeed conquers Philistia. All these areas the LORD claims and gives to His holy people.

Jesus has promised the meek shall inherit the earth. To those who put their trust in Jesus, He promises the New Heavens and the New Earth. More than that, God is their inheritance. The Holy Land in the Old Testament is a symbol of the inheritance of all the saints who put their faith in Jesus Christ. David’s greater Son, Jesus Christ, conquers it for us and gives it to us. We should try to remember this when we look at our lack of worldly goods in this life. This world is wasting away. Worldly wealth does not translate into the world to come. We are rich beyond our wildest dreams, just not in this age.

10Who can bring me into the fortified city? Who can lead me to Edom? 11O God, haven’t You rejected us, O God, haven’t You refused to go out with our armies? 12Help us against the enemy – man’s help is worthless! 13But with God we’ll fight valiantly; He will trample down our enemies.

Indeed, who can bring David into the fortified city and lead him into Edom? It may appear at the moment the LORD had left David and his armies for a brief moment. David realizes it is not by reason or strength he conquers. It is the LORD Jesus Christ who conquers our enemies. Man’s help is worthless. Our strength and power is worthless. But with the name of Jesus we shall fight valiantly against temptation and the wiles of the devil. By His power and strength we have been made victors over sin and death. The wicked who refuse to submit to Him we will trample down on the Last Day. We should never fear them but pray for their repentance.

Almighty Father, continually put forth before our eyes Jesus Christ at Your right hand, that we may be strengthened by it in our souls always. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
