#DailyDevotion Jesus Our High Priest Continually Intercedes For Us

Hebrews 7:23–25

230nce many were made priests because death didn’t let them continue as priests. 24But because Jesus lives forever, He will always be the Priest. 25And so He can forever save those who come to God by Him, because He always lives to pray for them.

In the book of Hebrews we have the theme—Jesus is better than. He is better than the angels. Jesus is better than Moses. He is greater than the Sabbath. And now, Jesus is greater than the priest and the high priest of the temple.

Many were made priest through the tribe of Levi. They had to be continually made priest because death overcame each and every one of them. Jesus is better than all of them because Jesus lives forever. He is forever our High Priest before God the Father. Priest intercede before God on behalf of men. They bring their sacrifices and offer them up. They offer sacrifices to atone for sin and to give thanksgiving. They pray for those who come to them so God would hear their prayers.

Jesus forever saves and is always the Priest before God because he never dies. He died once as the sacrifice for our sins. Death could not hold him because he was innocent. He overcame death and the grave for us. He ascended to the right hand of the Father as our High Priest bringing his blood and pouring it over the mercy seat of God’s throne.

He forever saves those who come to the Father through him, even his name. Jesus always lives to pray for them. That is to say, Jesus always pray for you as you come to God the Father through faith in him and faith in his name. Paul writes in Romans 8:34, “Christ died, more than that, He rose, He is at the right hand of God, and He prays for us.” Now think about that. Jesus is at the right hand of God and he prays for us. What does he pray for you? He prays you stay faithful to the end. He prays you persevere in the faith through all trials and tribulations. He prays you continually receive the gifts of Word and Sacrament for you to partake of to be able to persevere. He prays the Holy Spirit preserves to, gives you the gift of repentance and forgiveness of sins. Jesus prays you live live a sanctified life. He prays for you in accordance with the will of God. What do you think the Father’s answer to Jesus’ prayers and intercessions for you? Will it, is it not Amen, Amen, it shall be so?

So then rejoice and be glad you have such a great High Priest at the right hand of God who intercedes for you and live confidently in the grace and mercy of God your heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for given us your Son Jesus Christ to be our great High Priest who makes intercession for us. Always say yes to his prayers for us and may our prayers be conformed to you will as his are so we may be heard. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
