Psalm 62 Surely my heart is calm before God, for He saves me. 2Surely He is my Rock and my Savior, my Mountain Refuge where I’ll not be severely shaken.

When we realize, believe and trust we are before God and He is on our side, our hearts and souls can be calm. When we trust He alone is our salvation, not just from eternal death, but the provider of all good things then we can be still in ourselves. We can have that sense of calmness and that everything is going to work out for us what is best for us at the moment and in the future. We might not always like it in the moment, but we know the Almighty One has our back. Our present and future is in good hands.

David looks to the LORD as his Rock (tzur), his Savior (Yeshua from whence we get Jesus), and his Mountain Refuge (Heb. Misgab). The LORD Himself told the Israelites in Deuteronomy that He is their Rock. Paul tells us Jesus is that same Rock. The Rock who provides living water. He gives us the Holy Spirit and eternal life. What then can men do to us? He is the sure foundation upon which we can build our life. His words, His instructions, are life itself. They are the wisdom in which we are to live now and forever. The Holy Spirit which proceeds from Him gives us the faith and the power to hear, believe and do what is the will of Jesus.

Jesus is David’s Savior and He is our Savior. We need not fear whatever life, man, the world or the devil brings our way. We trust Jesus knows what is going on. He will not allow anything to happen to us which isn’t for our good, the good of the Church and the spreading of the Gospel. If we suffer, it isn’t without a purpose in the mind of God, our Savior. He is working through it our good. He is preparing us to bear the weight of eternal glory (2 Cor. 4). He is working in us patience, character, and a hope that doesn’t disappoint (Rom. 5). He is making us available to comfort others with the comfort we have received from Him. (2 Cor. 1). Ultimately, Jesus does raise us from the dead, gives us eternal life and we will dwell with God.

Jesus is our Mountain Refuge. He is our high ground. The enemy truly cannot touch us beyond what the LORD allows. We, as we remain faithful to Jesus, can be confident we have the high ground and will not be defeated by life and whatever it throws at us. While we may always feel like it is an uphill battle when we are in conflict, know that the opposite is the case. With Jesus as our Misgab (mountain fortress) it is life, death, sin, the devil and the like which is fighting the uphill battle. When our trust is in Jesus, we have the high ground, not the other way around. But I guess that is why the devil is called the great deceiver. He has us thinking we’re on the opposite side of this battle we are fighting. Look down and trust you have the High Ground.

3How long will you assail a man; how long will you be intent on murder? You are all like a leaning wall, a sagging fence. 4Yes, they plan to hurl him from his high position, delighting in lies. They bless with their mouths but curse in their hearts.

Jesus certainly knew what this is like as He battled the Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees. Jesus knew they could do nothing against Him apart from the will of the Father. They were a leaning wall and sagging fence. They sought to cast Him down with lies. They cursed Him. If that is how the world treated our Savior, how much more so will they treat us, His disciples? So believe Jesus’ words, He is our Rock, our Savior, and our Mountain Fortress. All other helps are leaning walls and tottering fences. They cannot be depended on. Jesus is who and what you can depend on to get you through your toughest times. This is something you can depend upon.

Almighty God and Father, You gave us Jesus to be our Rock, Savior and Mountain Fortress. Give us faith to trust Him so we will rest secure in Him at all times. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
