#DailyDevotion Is Your Lord Jesus Christ Greater Than All Other Gods?

Easter week 1 Friday

Ex 18:5–27

Exo 18:8-11  Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the LORD had delivered them.  (9)  And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that the LORD had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.  (10)  Jethro said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh and has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.  (11)  Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.”

Moses’ father in law is like a lot of people.  They know about God, they might even know a fair amount about God.  But they believe the God they know (as much as they know) is one God among many gods.  When Jethro hears all that the Lord had done for the people of Israel through his son in law Moses his mind had to change a bit about God, the Lord.

First he rejoiced when he heard all that the Lord had done.  As Christians we need to witness about our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done for us.  If we don’t open our mouths nobody will ever know the truth and they could never rejoice with us.  Secondly, through Moses’ witness Jethro came to know the one true God better and knew the Lord was at least “greater than all gods.”  Whether this is just a way of saying there aren’t any other gods, or whether he still gave some credence to other gods, I do not know.  But certainly Jethro realizes there is no god like Moses’ God, the Lord.

Hopefully in our witness to the world around us we can say such things about what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us that when we do open our mouths, they too will say with Jethro, “Now I know the Lord Jesus Christ is greater than all gods.” For our Lord Jesus Christ has become one of us. He has taken our iniquities upon himself. He has spilled his blood for us to atone for our sins. Jesus has taken our death upon himself that we might never taste death. Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and promise to raise us also on the last day to everlasting life. Indeed Jesus is greater than all the gods which are not gods at all.

Lord Jesus Christ, so give us your Holy Spirit, that when we open our mouths concerning all you have done for us, people may give praise to you and put their faith in you. Amen.
